With support from the Government of Pakistan, USAID and the Government of Japan, the NICVD became a fully functioning tertiary heart care center on August 14, 1971. For the next eight years, the NICVD remained a non-governmental organization (NGO), but in 1979 it was nationalized by the government of Pakistan and became an autonomous body under the Federal Ministry of Health.
The current governing body of the NICVD is under the Government of Sindh with the Honorable Prime Minister of Sindh as Chairman of the Governing Board. The director of the NICVD fulfills the role of secretary of the Executive Board and Chief Executive Officer of the Institute and chairman of the Academic Faculty.
